Harrogate Business Hustings - 2024 General Election

Monday evening (10 June), Harrogate Chamber held a hustings for candidates representing Harrogate & Knaresborough in the upcoming General Election.

The meeting began with Chamber President, Phill Holdsworth paying tribute to past president, Martin Gerrard who has very sadly passed away at the age of 69.

The hustings, expertly chaired by Editor of the Stray Ferret, John Plummer, gave candidates the opportunity to answer questions from the business community on a wide range of issues, including the future of the high street in Harrogate, the controversial Station Gateway project, funding for the NHS and support for the non-for-profit sector.

Six out of the seven candidates standing in this years’ election were in attendance: Tom Gordon, Liberal Democrats; Paul Haslam, Independent; Andrew Jones, Conservative; Shan Oakes, Green Party; John Swales, Reform UK; Conrad Whitcroft, Labour Party.

We would like to thank all candidates for participating in a lively and engaging discussion, and all those who asked such pertinent questions.

Thanks also to John Plummer for facilitating the meeting and Pavillions of Harrogate for hosting.

We now look forward to our July meeting, which takes place on 8th July at The Crown Hotel. Register your place on the Chamber website.
